Our story

Three generations of plumbing and heating in Goderich

Hoffmeyer Plumbing & Heating Limited has worked out of 55 Kingston St in Goderich since the 1960s. Founded in 1958, family-run across three generations, and now part of the Jayden's Mechanical family.

1958Founded May 2, 1958

Started as Near & Hoffmeyer, built by one family.

Hoffmeyer Plumbing & Heating Limited was founded on May 2, 1958, by Len Near and Jack Hoffmeyer as Near & Hoffmeyer, working out of 59 Hamilton St in Goderich. In the early 1960s Jack bought out his partner, changed the name, and moved the shop to Kingston Street, where it has been ever since.

An Appliance Sales & Service division was added at 58 Kingston St in 1971 and ran for forty years. The business grew on plumbing, heating, and cooling work across Goderich and Huron County, and on the showroom and the dealer relationships that let a small shop carry the brands a big one would.

Three generations, one name

From the founder to the crew today, here is how the business passed down through one Goderich family.

1958

Founded as Near & Hoffmeyer by Len Near and Jack Hoffmeyer at 59 Hamilton St in Goderich.

1960s

Jack Hoffmeyer buys out Len Near and moves the shop to Kingston Street.

1971

An Appliance Sales & Service division opens at 58 Kingston St.

1994

Jack retires and his son Doug Hoffmeyer takes the reins, the second generation.

2007

Doug's son Chris Hoffmeyer joins the business, the third generation.

2011

The Goderich tornado damages the building; the shop runs from 317 Huron Rd for about eighteen months before coming home.

2023

Hoffmeyer joins the Jayden's Mechanical family as its Goderich branch.

The building on Kingston Street

A shop with its own history

The building at 55 Kingston St was not always a plumbing shop. A memory wall inside traces it back to the Royal Hotel, built in 1895, and then to the Goderich Bottling Works in the 1950s, before it became the Hoffmeyer home base.

On August 21, 2011, a tornado struck Goderich and badly damaged the building. The shop kept running, relocated for about eighteen months to 317 Huron Rd with help from Pete and Frank Strickland and Goderich Toyota, before the work came home to Kingston Street. Carrying on through that is part of why the shop is still here.

The 2023 chapter

Part of the Jayden's Mechanical family

In 2023, Hoffmeyer joined the Jayden's Mechanical family as its Goderich branch, carrying a sixty-plus-year legacy into a wider Southwestern Ontario group. The Hoffmeyer name, the Kingston Street location, and the crews all stayed, now backed by more depth for parts, peak demand, and emergency coverage.

The same family shop. The same standard. The backing of a larger group.
